A cybercrime syndicate known as Lemon Group has pre-infected over 8.9 million Android smartphones worldwide with a malware strain called Guerilla. The malware turns these devices into mobile proxies, tools for stealing and selling SMS messages, social media and online messaging accounts, and monetization via advertisements and click fraud. The infections are globally spread across in over 180 countries, with over 50 brands of mobile devices compromised.
